Top 3 Tips for Using LinkedIn
LinkedIn is the social media platform for professionals who are looking to increase their professional network, whether it be to help build their business, find a new job or to recruit staff.
LinkedIn is a great resource for individuals to connect with other like-minded professionals; to share information and to building valuable connections. Members can also join groups that are relevant to their career - a great tool to use as a focus group, market research or to share knowledge and ideas. Groups can really help to make an impression.
Here are 3 great tips for individuals using LinkedIn.
Tip #1: Import Your Contacts
If a user is new to LinkedIn, but have a large network of professional connections – then they can build their connections by using their email lists to connect with them. If the contacts in their emails are on LinkedIn - then they will be given the opportunity to 'Connect' with them. If those contacts are not on LinkedIn, then an email can be sent inviting those contacts to join LinkedIn and to connect. This can also help users who use a different email to connect find each other.
Simply go to the ‘Connections’ tab, and click on the ‘Add Connections”. It should bring this up:
Select the email you use, enter your email address and put in your password and then hit the 'Continue' button. LinkedIn will then scan through your contact list and find all the contacts that are on this social media platform, and for those that are not, they will give you the opportunity to invite them.
Tip #2: Join Relevant Groups
There are thousands upon thousands of groups to join on LinkedIn. I am a marketer and find it useful to join Groups like 'Australian Marketing Group' and 'Australian Marketing Group' as I can speak to other marketing professionals and talk about different strategies and trends. I also own a website targeted at Gold Coast Mums, Bizzi 4 Babies, and so I have joined another group called 'Mum Entrepreneurs' - not only can I also get great advice from these women, but I can also network and have been able to sign up a few businesses for my website.
There are a myriad of groups on LinkedIn, and no matter what industry, there is sure to be a Group relevant.
To join a group on LinkedIn, simply go to the 'Interests' tab and scroll down and hit 'Groups'. This image should appear:
As you can see I have already joined a couple of groups. If you haven't already, then you can do so by searching for a Group - see 'Find a group' button on right hand side.
If you have already joined groups, you can do searches to find a topic if you are looking for specific information or just to quickly skim over recent topics. Alternatively, you can click on the group specifically to find out what is going on in there.
Can't find the group for you? Maybe it doesn't exist! This gives you an opportunity to create your own group and have a little control over content and so forth. A great way to build connections and share information with your core target market.
Tip #3: Advertise or Look for Jobs
Looking for to recruit a new staff member, or looking for a new career path? LinkedIn offers a great platform for both recruiting and seeking out new opportunities. Simply head over to the ‘Jobs’ tab and click the button.
The view above should appear.
Searching for a job
If you are searching for a new job simply put the title of the position you would be looking for into the search box, then click on the Advanced search and put in options such as location, industry and desired salary and then click search. LinkedIn will then list all the jobs that match your search. You can click on each job advertisement, read the job description and apply with just a click of a button.
Recruiting staff members
If you want to recruit staff members, then you will need to have a company profile set up. If you have a company profile set up, then all you have to do is press the 'Post a job' button on the right and then follow the prompts.
